20 Weeks

Posted on September 30, 2007 21:38 by Sharla

We had a great week with Baby Teeny!  We had our 20 week check up and confirmed he is (still) a boy!  He's still moving around a lot, and Josh got to feel a big kick for the first time the other night.

We watched In The Womb on the National Geographic channel this week to get an idea of what life is like for Teeny.  It's a really  neat program with lots of interesting images and facts.

We went out on an excursion to a couple of baby stores also this week - mainly to check out the furniture and also to get an idea of the other items and layout of the store in preparation for when we register.  We hit up Babies R Us and USA Baby in Charlotte.  We didn't find any furniture that we liked in the stores, but that was ok, because what we had chosen at Pottery Barn Kids was really our favorite, and we just wanted to make sure there weren't less expensive alternatives at these stores before buying (more on the furniture below).  I think we've decided to register at Babies R Us and Pottery Barn Kids, but that will probably be later in the year.  We've still got to do a bit more research on some items, and we don't want to get ahead of ourselves and do it too early.

So, the furniture we've finally decided on (unless it comes in and in a hormonal craze I decide to change my mind -- please hope for me that I won't do that and waste shipping $$!) is, after COUNTLESS hours of research <<drumroll please>>:

Crib:  Kendall Espresso Crib from Pottery Barn Kids (with toddler bed conversion kit)

Dresser:  Kendall Drawer Chest in Espresso from Pottery Barn Kids
(no pic of the espresso finish online)

Changing Table:  Mission-style Changing Table in cherry from JCPenney (no picture of the cherry finish online --- hopefully it will match the PBK espresso as closely as the 2 online swatch squares matched!)

There's still a few more things to decide on for the room, but it's starting to come together!

Here's the 20 weeks belly pic (be sure to check out the updated belly comparison pictures under the image galleries) -- Baby Teeny sure is growing!

20 Week Dr Appt & Ultrasound

Posted on September 28, 2007 15:44 by Sharla
Baby Teeny is still a boy!  We had the ultrasound tech confirm at the appointment yesterday, just to be sure.  Here are a couple of the images:

This ultrasound was intended to take a lot of measurements and check out all kinds of things to see if everything was growing and developing on track.  Teeny's heart beat was great, at 148 beats per minute, and the doctor said everything looked great.  But he did bring up what he labeled as a likely insignificant finding - a choroid plexus cyst (CPC) in the brain.  He said that these are not uncommon in babies at this stage of pregnancy (we found a statistic saying 1 in 50-100 babies have them), and usually have no medical implications and go away on their own.  However, in rare situations, they can be a sign of Trisomy 18, also known as Edwards Syndrome.  The doctor said that because I've had a tetra screen come back normal as well as having no other signs of Trisomy 18, that it is very likely that the cyst is not indicative of anything wrong.  He offered us a referral to a perinatal specialist to get a Level II ultrasound, where a highly trained doctor can look at more detail to see if there are any other signs present for Trisomy 18.  If there are, then we would be offered to have an amniocentesis, which definitively confirms or excludes the presence of chromosomal abnormalities.  Even though we're fairly confident that the cyst is not related to the Trisomy 18, we decided to go ahead and schedule the scan with the specialist to get her opinion -- and to get more chances to see Teeny on screen!  That appointment is scheduled for Monday afternoon with Dr. Smith at the Gaston Perinatal Center

To put it all in perspective, my doctor told us his personal encounter with the cysts and possibility of Trisomy 18.  His son had 2 cysts, his wife had an abnormal tetra screen, and the Level II ultrasound showed other possible signs of the abnormality.  They then went on to have the amnio, which confirmed that the baby was healthy and did not have Trisomy 18.  And the risk for Baby Teeny to have Trisomy 18 is actually 1 in 447 with the presence of a CPC (based on my age), which is 0.2% (from the chart in the first link above).  So we are not at all worried at this point and feel good about all the development Teeny has had thus far!

I also did a urine sample and all the other routine chart updates.  To date, I've gained 13 lbs with the pregnancy, which is right about average for this stage of the game.  We also had a few questions for the doctor that he easily answered -- I should take claritin instead of benadryl for my fall allergies; I should see the midwives on my appointment rotations because they are included in the on-call schedule for labor & delivery; and a rather TMI question that I will refrain from publishing on the intar-web :)

Our next  check up is at 24 weeks on Oct. 26th with Dr. Howe (this is actually the doctor that delivered Josh!).  I'll have to do the 1 hr glucose test for this appointment to screen for gestational diabetes - let's hope I pass!

Babymoon Bummer

Posted on September 23, 2007 23:20 by Sharla

Josh & I had planned a trip to Savannah, GA for this year for quite some time.  Once we found out we were pregnant, we timed it so it would be a nice babymoon - during early fall, in the middle of the 2nd trimester.  We went to Charleston a while back, and assumed a trip to Savannah would be quite similar.

WRONG!  Here are just a few of the reasons why this trip sucked:

  • The Hotel.  We stayed at the Marriott on the river.  It wasn't as nice as I expect a Marriott to be, so even though the room was ok, I felt like we were paying for more than what we were getting.  And, to top it off, we had issues with our TV.  Since it was raining a good majority of the time we were there, we wanted to watch a movie in the room.  Not possible!  The menu button didn't work, and the night maintenance man had no clue how to fix it.  The next morning, two AV guys spent about 45 minutes working on the TV, and finally it was fixed.  The hotel did comp us our parking fees for the trouble, so that at least helped my sour mood, while I laid in the bed at 8:00 at night with nothing to watch on TV.
  • The Weather.  It rained.  And rained.  Thursday night it sprinkled as we walked on River Street.  Friday morning and early afternoon were spent in the room because of thunderstorms and heavy rain.  We ventured out in the afternoon and walked around the city a bit, but rain was still threatening.  The forecast continued to call for rain the next day, but we had already made up our minds to leave early on Saturday morning, so at that point, it didn't matter any more.
  • The Great Public Shuttle Debacle.  I researched many things about Savannah online before going, and one of the things I found was that the city offered a free shuttle service around downtown and stops at many hotels, including ours.  We planned to take advantage of the shuttle and use it as our means of getting around to save our feet from aching by walking too much.  We headed out after the rain cleared on Friday afternoon to the shuttle stop in front of the hotel.  There were several people waiting for the tourist shuttle (that you had to pay for), so we were the only ones getting on the public shuttle.  I imagined it would be like uptown Charlotte's shuttle service - WRONG!  Somehow, we were the only tourists that didn't get the memo that it was dirty, smelly, and heavily used by locals.  We sucked it up and rode to our stop and got off.  When it was time to head back to the hotel, we boarded at a different stop.  After about 15 minutes, it became apparent that the driver had skipped our stop (the shuttle had to turn down a side street to get to the Marriott), and we were too far to get off and walk at that point.  So we rode the trolley hoping he would go by our stop the next time, and if not, we'd get off and walk it at the next one.  He did go by the Marriott on the next run.  He probably figured...."hmmmm....why have these tourist folks ridden the shuttle for a full hour and not gotten off yet?"  It was so awkward being shuttled out to the Marriott and getting off the bus like big old stereotypical tourists as all the locals probably bitched under their breath about having to wait the extra turns for us to get off at the hotel.
  • Lack of Charm and Things to Do.  As I mentioned above, I thought Savannah would be like Charleston, and it was, in some small ways.  But add a bit of New York's construction & grunge, and take away a bunch of the charm of Charleston, and that was the Savannah I experienced.  Maybe the shuttle ride that drove us amidst the slum areas added to my perception, but nonetheless, there was much less to see and do than I had anticipated.  And therefore, after walking around for a couple of hours on Friday, we decided to leave Saturday morning instead of Sunday.
  • Kilwin's Not Open.  Josh & I love ice cream from Kilwin's, and when I was on the Savannah's visitor website and saw there was a Kilwin's, we were ecstatic...until were trying to map our walking route and found out it wasn't scheduled to open until next month, which the visitor's site failed to mention!

All that being said - there were a few high points of the trip, so to be fair and balanced, I'll enumerate:

  • Boats on the River.  Our hotel room faced right into the river, and it was neat to watch all the various boats run up and down the riverside.  Those were probably the most exciting views of the trip!
  • River Street. This street was what I had expected - charming, quaint little stores mixed in with several restaurants.  Too bad it was so short we walked the whole length of it Thursday night.
  • Savannah Sweets.  Since we weren't able to visit Kilwin's, this store did as a fine runner-up.  They had some great candy selections, and the chocolate covered marshmallows and different chocolate barks also helped with our sour moods :)
  • The Cotton Exchange.  We had great food and loved the atmosphere of this restaurant on Friday evening.
Here's some pics from our sad little trip:

19 Weeks

Posted on September 23, 2007 19:02 by Sharla

It's been a great week!  Baby Teeny is still moving around a lot, and I'm starting to get used to it.  Things are awesome.  I love being preggers!

Josh & I have been narrowing down our furniture choices, and I think we're close to selecting the crib, dresser, and changer.  I'll post pics and details once we do actually make the purchase - I have been known to change my mind! :)  And it is rather scary seeing how expensive all of the preparation is going to be.

I have been so excited to get a cute preggers t-shirt, and finally decided on one from  2 chix - this "oh boy" shirt.  Way cute!

Next week is another exciting one -- we have our 20 week check up and ultrasound on Thursday with my regular OB-GYN, Dr. Lynch.

Here's the 19 weeks belly pic:

18 Weeks

Lots of excitement this week, now that we know Teeny is a boy!  I've already gone out and bought several adorable outfits, Old Navy and Gap being my favorite places!  We've started researching furniture, but aren't quite decided on the finish / color we want to use.  The room is already painted a light gray, and we are just going to leave it as-is, and we are also going to decorate with dinosaurs, which was creatively inspired by Pottery Barn Kids' awesome line.  Here are some of thee things we've bought already:

Quilt (no worries - I'm not using it in the crib...will be for decor at first and later for toddler Teeny)

Small pillow sham

Rocker

Stuffed Animals

Mobile

So exciting!  I love obsessing over stuff like this :)

We've also chosen a name, but we're not announcing until after Teeny is born.  So stay tuned!

Things have been going well with the pregnancy.  I'm still having slight back and hip aches, but I think that the prenatal fitness and yoga classes are really helping.  And a big milestone this week is that I've started feeling Teeny's movements!  The first movements felt almost like a light finger tapping inside, but they do seem to be getting a bit stronger sometimes.  They felt really weird at first, but I think I'm starting to get used to them.

Here's the 18 weeks belly pic:

What's in a name?

Posted on September 12, 2007 04:13 by Sharla
Dad-to-be Josh dropping in for a quick post...

Now that we know that Teeny has a weenie the question we're both hearing is "Do you have a name?".

After hearing this question about a dozen times in 4 days I got to thinking.  A quick check of the highly scientific
"Cost of Raising a Child and Child Care Cost Calculator" tells me it will cost us $340,552 to
raise Baby Teeny and put him through college.

That's roughly $16,000 a year inflation notwithstanding.

In light of this somber information I'd like to announce the "Baby Teeny Naming Rights" fire sale.

Baby Name For Sale

Why own the naming rights to the Charlotte Bobcats Arena when you can control the future ridicule of a child.

For only $18,000 a year (I've got to get paid too!) you can name Baby Teeny anything you'd like including:
  • Tom Collins (who doesn't like a good mixer?)
  • Michelle Collins (why not introduce some gender confusion)
  • Collin Collins (no I didn't st-stutter)
Corporations are welcome (that means you, Time Warner Digital Cable with DVR Collins®).

Cash, MasterCard, Visa accepted.  No C.O.D.s

Mocha Makes a New Friend

Posted on September 9, 2007 18:02 by Sharla
Alan & Stephanie have adopted a new dog, Jack (well, his name at the shelter was "Armani," but we all think he looks much more like a "Jack").  He's such a cute and easy-going doggie!  Here's a pic of Jack:

We brought Jack over for a few hours while Alan & Stephanie were out at a birthday party yesterday.  Mocha has never really been around another dog that actually wanted to play with her, so she was so excited!  They got along so well, and they tired themselves out playing so much.  Here's a couple of pics of their fun play time:

We're so excited that Mocha has a playful dog friend now! :)

17 Weeks

What a great week!!!  We found out Baby Teeny is a boy (in case you couldn't tell by the new design of the blog :)  ).  So I'm now excitedly narrowing down my options for things like baby announcements, car seats, strollers, furniture, etc.  It definitely makes things a lot more real now that we know "he" will be a boy!

I started a new fitness class this week - Moms in Motion at Gaston Memorial Hospital.  It meets every Tuesday & Thursday for about a hour, and we do things like slight cardio, strength exercises, and stretching.  It's a pretty good workout, and it's a nice opportunity to talk about pregnancy and baby stuff with the teachers or other women in the class.  The teacher told us a really gross horror story about a recent labor situation at the hospital (intended to reinforce us to do our kegel exercises) - I'll never think about slacking off again!!  I'm liking the class so far, though!

I am eating a lot more these days - I have to slap Josh's hand away when he tries to grab at my food before I'm done (he's used to getting leftovers off my plate usually).  And, I've developed what I think can only be described as a craving.  I don't eat peanut butter much at all, but here lately, I've eaten a whole jar in a week -- just straight out with a spoon!  I joked with Josh that it means this baby is definitely his, because he has always eaten a lot of peanut butter.

Boy, oh boy!

Well, about half of you that voted in our poll were right - we're on Team Blue!!

We had our gender ultrasound at Fetal Fotos today, and confirmed that Baby Teeny is a boy.  Here are the ultrasound pics showing the goods (I apologize adult Teeny for posting your stuff on the net, but we promise to not do it with real pictures!):

They are pretty hard to really discern the boy parts in these pics unless you know exactly what you're looking for (the turtle), but in the room on the screen (and on the movie - see it below) you could really tell.  I actually already saw the boy parts before the technician even mentioned them to us during the scan, so I was 100% certain once she pointed it out.  So there's really not a question that Teeny is a boy.  And now we can begin the shopping phase!!!

And here's a cute picture of Teeny's feet:

And I have to say - Fetal Fotos was a great place!  The atmosphere was extremely nice (not clinical at all) and it was rather inexpensive compared to other prenatal imaging places in the area.  We highly recommend the company for anyone else looking for an early gender scan or later 3D/4D imaging (they're franchised nationwide).

Amy's Visit

Posted on September 2, 2007 21:14 by Sharla

My friend Amy visited from ATL this weekend.  We had been planning a movie date to see the Nanny Diaries for many months, and since they finally decided to release the film, we decided on this weekend.  She came up on Saturday afternoon and we had lunch and saw the movie (my review -- it was ok, not great, not horrible).  We hung out for a bit at the house afterwards, and then headed out to dinner with Josh to Applebee's.  The experience was kind of terrible (we waited forever to get a table, the waitress was not the greatest, and they took forever to bring out our lackluster food), but the dinner was salvaged by the entertainment value -- two really drunk young girls at the bar.  They kept doing pinky swears with each other and were very flirty with all and any of the guys around them.  Hilarious, but in the "you kinda had to be there" style.

We finished out the evening with playing some Yahtzee (old school ya'll!).  Amy represented in both games (even though she was all "how do you play?? I'm confused..." at the beginning -- HUSTLA!).  Here's some pics from game time:

Yay for fun times with the Ames!!
