6 Weeks

Jackson is 6 weeks old today!  Here are his (approximate) stats:

12.5 lbs (between percentile 75 & 90)
24 " (percentile 95)

This week included a visit from Abbey & Amelia, a walk in Martha Rivers park, and the usual outings to Moms in Motion and visits with his Aunt Stephanie and Maw-Maw.  He also had his first outing without either me or Josh -- Lynn (his Grammy) picked him up and took him to Kings Mountain to visit with Maw-Maw White, Grandmother Collins, and Great Aunt Annie.  He did great!  We missed him, but were able to utilize the time to be productive.

Abbey, Amelia, & Jackson

Sleeping at night is still going well -- and seems to be getting better as time goes by.  He's now going about 6 hours before the first middle of the night feeding (he even made 7 hours one night this week!), and then usually 5 hours before the next one, which ends up being early in the morning.  He still fusses a few times (usually before the 2nd feeding of the night).

He's babbling and smiling more and more every day.  He still loves his activity mat, the dinosaurs above his changing table, and ceiling fans.

Up next week --- an overnight stay with his Grammy & Pappy.  And I have my 6-week check up with the midwife at the OB office.

Jackson's First Easter

Posted on March 24, 2008 16:26 by Sharla

Jackson with his Easter basket -- I had wanted to take a picture with him inside the basket, but he's too big and it just looked dorky!

We celebrated Easter this year with Josh's family (we rotate years with each of our families) at his Grandmother's house along with his parents, Alan & Stephanie, his Maw Maw, and the Badgetts (his aunt, uncle, cousins).  We had a fun time having lunch and enjoying the holiday with family, and Jackson was doted on by everyone.  At one point it looked like he was a celebrity being hounded by the papparazi with so many camera flashes going off!  Of course, he should be used to it by now with all the photo sessions we have at home :)

Later in the day we headed over to Alan & Stephanie's house since her family was visiting for dinner and we wanted to give them a chance to meet Jackson.  He also visited Alan & Stephanie's neighbors so they could meet him as well.  He had fun at Auntie Steph's (even though he did spit up on your blanket......sorry about that....   :(   ......)

Here are some other pictures we snapped on Easter:

Apparently Jackson thought we were at JC Penney's portrait studio :)

The Easter outfit -- the first time he's worn shoes that weren't Robeez!

Yay for self timer on the camera! (and Amy -- I really need to remember the arm trick.....blimey....)

The juxtaposition of the two following pictures is hilarious....and very much a reality in our house!

(isn't the monogrammed bib just adorable?!  ---- many thanks to my friend Jillian and her family for that gift -- we love it!)

Jackson's 5th Week

Posted on March 24, 2008 04:26 by Sharla
5 weeks old today!

Jackson is being increasingly more interactive as each day passes, and he's talking more and more -- especially to the dinosaurs! :)  One of his newest developments is the interactive smile -- at first, he would smile at us (or objects) seemingly randomly.  Now, he sometimes will initiate a smile to me, and then when I encouragingly smile back and talk to him, he'll smile even bigger!  Yay!!  He's starting to learn that his smiling is positively reinforced, and hopefully that will mean even more grins for us :)

His favorite things to look at still include the dinosaur art, ceiling fans, pictures on the walls, and himself in the mirror.  He's even laughed and talked to himself in the mirror a handful of times.

He visited with his Great Aunt Vickie for the first time this week.  We're glad she could stop by and see him!

As for the # 1 question we're asked --- he's about average with regards to sleeping during the night.  He does sleep for hours at a time (in his crib still!), but he's not on a completely consistent schedule yet.  He goes down any time between 7:00 - 8:00ish, and sleeps anywhere from 3 - 5 hours at a time.  Some nights he's more fussy than others though, and he might wake up more than usual, and stay awake an hour or more before going back to sleep.  But usually he's only up for his feedings / changes a couple of times during the night, and maybe once or twice more for no (apparent) reason -- and typically he goes back to sleep within minutes of being put down, pacifier returned, or consoled (but there are those nights he fusses for over an hour too....it's not always easy breezy!).  We can't even begin to think about any kind of "training" at this point -- he's just too young!  But we do try to keep to routines and not get in too many bad habits ourselves (keeping interaction / stimuli minimal during the night, not holding / rocking him all the way to sleep, etc).  He does still need to be swaddled (I have much love for the Swaddle Me blankets!) and we are still using the white noise music on the iPod in his crib (but we are lowering the volume every so often, and hope to phase that out altogether at some point).  Another go-to trick to help him get to sleep -- using our hands over his arms and legs so he can't jerk / kick....he often keeps himself from getting to a deep sleep with all his jerky movements, and even though it looks like we're being mean, he actually seems comforted being held still like this (and funny enough -- Lynn mentioned that they did the exact same thing with Josh when he was a baby because he was fidgety and would keep himself awake too!).  Luckily, the swaddling blanket usually performs this for us, so we don't have to resort to this trick too often :)

Here's a couple of other pictures from the week:

Jackson's Favorite Friends

Posted on March 22, 2008 18:10 by Sharla

Since very early on, Jackson has been enamored with the dinosaur art hanging above his changing table.  In the beginning, he would instantly stare at the images completely engrossed (which makes diaper changes rather easy!).  Now that he's more interactive, he smiles and babbles with the dinosaurs, as though they're best of friends.  As a matter of fact, he smiles and talks to the dinos more than us!!  It always makes me laugh!

Here's a short video of Jackson "talking" to his dinosaurs :)

Jackson's 4th Week

Posted on March 17, 2008 03:12 by Sharla
I can't belive it's been 4 weeks since Jackson was born!  He's still changing every day!

He's up to about 11 lbs now, so we are really getting a workout with holding and carrying :)  He's smiling a lot more now, and especially so when he's getting his diaper changed -- he loves being on his changing table and instantly becomes engrossed in staring at the dinosaur drawings hanging on the wall.  He'll even smile and coo at them -- it's so funny!

He's also started cooing and making sounds a lot more, and sometimes even blows raspberries with his mouth.  He's become a lot more alert and interested in looking at objects and people.  He really enjoys playing on his activity mat, and especially likes the light up musical star and the red bird toy.

This week was Josh's first back to work since the birth, so we were left to figure out a new routine with just the two of us.  It was easier than I was expecting, but still a challenge!  I just always made sure that I got a shower and at least attempted to work out before noon :)  We also had some of our first "outings" this week -- to the grocery store, Target with my mom, and a "play date" with two other moms and babies from my Moms in Motion class.

Here are some pictures from the week:

Some Success

Posted on March 10, 2008 17:42 by Sharla
Last night was Jackson's first night of sleeping in the crib for the full night!  We tried a couple of new things, and they seemed to work, so we'll see how it goes going forward.
  1. The super swaddle.  The swaddling blanket we've been using works well for his arms, but his legs still have wriggling / kicking room, so I used a light blanket to swaddle over top of his legs.
  2. White noise turned up LOUD.  I read online that babies love the white noise sounds because it reminds them of the womb, but parents often have them turned too low, because the noise in the womb is much louder.  So we turned on the Infant Calm album on the iPod dock, and put it right in the crib next to him.

Here's how the night went:

10:00 -- Put him down / he's OUT!
2:15 -- Woke up for a diaper change & feeding.  Back to sleep fairly easily.
4:00 -- Woke up fussy; back to sleep somewhat easily
5:00 -- Woke up fussy; back to sleep, but not easily, and continued to wake himself up several times while going to sleep.
5:15 -- Woke up fussy; did a diaper change & feeding; back to sleep right before 6:00
8:00 -- Woke up for the day

Not too bad for the first night in the crib!  Hopefully we can get better through the 2nd shift though :)

Jackson's 3rd Week

Posted on March 10, 2008 02:58 by Sharla

This was a tough week for us as parents (and probably for Jackson too).  He has started crying more, and unlike his early days, he can often times be inconsolable for any length of time.  He's also a much lighter sleeper now, and often wakes himself up when lying on his back in his pack n play, bassinet, or crib.  He spends most of his days sleeping on me or Josh (either holding him or in the carrier / sling), and at night, he usually sleeps pretty well during the "first shift" in his bassinet (but only if swaddled up tight as though in a straight jacket) until about 3:00 am.  "Second shift" is usually much more fretful, and even if he stays in the bassinet the entire time, he fusses every 10 minutes or so, and will only sleep for about an hour.  Also, the swing and bouncer seat were easy bets in the first weeks with calming him down, and not so much now.  It only takes a few minutes within placing him in the swing before he screams like he's injured, and the bouncer seat is a hit-or-miss with him.  Hopefully this phase won't last too long, and we can get him used to sleeping or even being content to lay on his back...

Any BTDT mom tips?!  We've tried heating up the bassinet / crib before putting him down, a heartbeat / womb sound machine, white noise sounds (vacuum, washer, dryer, etc) by his bed, swaddling, rocking him to various degrees of sleep (drowsy, drifting off, just asleep, snoring-dead asleep).  It feels like we're going backward with the sleeping situation.

Josh taking advantage of Jackson sleep time to catch up on his own

On the other hand, his personality is definitely starting to develop more this week.  He's actually given a few genuine smiles (while awake)!  And he's starting to enjoy some play activities while awake -- like clapping his hands and playing with his lower lip -- those are sure ways to get him making happy faces.  Here's a short video of him playing:

And he still seems to be getting bigger and bigger.  He's too long for a lot of the onesies / sleepers that we started out with...it's looking like it's time to migrate to size 3-6 mos in the standard Gerber onesies!

Here are some pictures from his 3rd week:

Next week will be interesting -- Josh goes back to work, so I will be figuring out a new daytime routine by myself.
